Topic: CHIC 3339 Final
Paper details:

The article by rios (page 121) examines the similarities and differences between the Chicano and Xicano Movements. His framework for analyzing these movements were the concepts of identity, ideology, and imagination. 122-24 and 126 – 27.

On page 131, he lists 6 characteristics shared by both movements. Review them.

On page 132, Figure 3: Identity as Praxis, Rios gives us a path to achieving critical thinking perspectives through ‘Praxis.” Do not lose sight that praxis means theory and action. That is, book learning is not enough. There must be application. Another way to think about this word is, “movement.” I’ll explain: As you move into an understanding of identity, you develop an ideology, then as you imagine the world you would like to see, there is Personal Action. From here your action may be at the professional level moving onto communal or community action. Finally we arrive at social justice.

Question: How has this class on cultural diversity opened up your sense of identity, ideology, and imagination?

Put another way, reflect on how the readings, mini lectures, films have caused you to rethink your identity – remember, Rios is talking about Chicanos/Xicanos and his concern is with critical thinking and socail action. If possible have you starting to develop an ideology or has imagination crept into your thinking?

Prepare a 3 to 4 page paper addressing this question. Double-space with one-inch margins all aroound. Make sure your name is on your paper. Caution: This is not an opinion paper so don’t go there. I want you to reflect before even writing. Take a couple days reflect and take notes (to yourself). On what? What you want to write about. What examples should you use? What became meaningful as the semester moved along? Identity, ideology and imagination are stages of growth. They do not happen at once so I do not assume you will all write on these three concepts. But if you reflect on all three you will begin to see where you stand. For example, my identity is Chicano (as a persepctive) and my heritage is Mexican. My ideology is Progressive in that I do not affiliate with political parties on the right or left but my imagaination is always a world that is fair to all. That is why we call it, social justice. If we had time I would lay it all out for you.
