Smart Growth The selected project was the creation of walkable neighborhoods in DuPont, Washington State. The project relied on the various strategies to promote the creation of livable areas that allows people to walk easily. ln the building of Northwest Landing, the developer and the designer, Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company and Calthorpe Associates respectively sought to design a community whereby the people would not need to drive for every trip. The building project would be developed on 3,000-acre site that used to be an explosives factory in Washington (Create Walkable, 2018: 2024 – Write My Essay For Me | Essay Writing Service For Your Papers Online). Northwest Landing integrates the grid of streets and the sidewalks that promotes bicycling and walking. lt would construct 12 miles of paths to maintain the connections through the creation of 550 acres of protected open space.
Most of the homes located in the project area are within bicycling and walking distance of the main companies’ workplaces. The neighborhood comprises an elementary school that are within walking distance for the local children. Northwest Landing project provides different forms of housing including single-family houses, condominiums, apartments, and single-family homes among others. The design of housing reflects on the main cottage style that popular in the area. Multifamily buildings comprise of street facades that matches the single-family homes and thus, making them more attractive. ln addition, the project area has a retirement community that comprises of independent and assisted living cottages with shuttles to the various amenities in DuPont and military installations. Other strategies for the smart growth of Northwest Landing includes street and house design that have helped to encourage walking. The designs have narrow streets reducing traffic and lowering crossing distances.
Houses have narrow, deep lots with front porches to allow the passing pedestrians to visit the people living in the area.

The project also has a park and ride facility for the use by commuter bus service to Tacoma and Seattle and it is located along downturn of the area and it is within walking distance by numerous residents.

The facility also serves the potential Sounder commuter rail line extension towards DuPont (Mohammed, Alshuwaikhat, & Adenle, 2016: 2024 – Do my homework – Help write my assignment online). As such, the good community design and strategies implemented for the project has made Northwest Landing area one of the most walkable communities in the U.S.
ln comparison with my state smart growth strategies, there were some similarities and differences as well. Some of the similarities is the use of sustainability building designs that encouraged open spaces and parks for people to exercise and walk easily in Florida.
As a state located in the coastal area, the development projects had open spaces and sustainable building designs. ln both states, walking and bicycling were encouraged through the design and development of the houses close to their working offices and locations.
However, the Florida state design strategies were different as they encouraged the reinvestment in the existing infrastructure and proper rehabilitation of the existing buildings. ln my state, more efforts have been made to increase the overall quality of life that allows the communities to live in a good environment that is economically viable.
Unlike in Northwest landing, my area is able to create a good environment that leads to the creation of significant business opportunities and expansion of the local taxes (Kitchin, 2015 – Research Paper Writing Help Service). Also, my area is keen on promoting community and stakeholder engagement in the overall development decisions.
The stakeholder and community engagement actions help to improve quality coordination to overcome potential challenges that could lower the quality of life and safety in the area. Such strategies make it possible to make the areas more livable.
