While George Washington initially did not allow Africans in the Continental Army, a necessity for troops made him reconsider after a couple of months. In certain areas, African soldiers made up 25 percent of the Continental Army. Whether on the American or British side, many Africans saw fighting in the Revolutionary War as an opportunity to raise their social status. Upon serving in the military, some Africans were even able to purchase their freedom.
The Revolutionary War greatly affected Native Americans. Like the Seven Years’ War, the Revolutionary War once again stuck Native Americans in the middle of a large conflict. Native Americans had to choose their allegiances carefully, considering both political calculations and personal relationships. Nonetheless, tribal divisions over European allegiances existed.
While there were allegiances on both sides of the spectrum, the majority of Native Americans allied themselves with the British. As Native Americans were becoming more dependent on imported goods, it made sense to ally with England. America had far less supplies and in addition, did little to prevent trespassing on Indian territories.
