Morphology is the study of the structure of words and describes the formation of words from morphemes. The term morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning in a sentence. A morpheme may be represented as a short letter like “s.” The letter adds plurality to the word like humans. A morpheme may be changed so as to modify a word structure so that it can change the meaning of the sentence (Morgan & Demuth, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay).
The study makes a reliable and independent contribution to both writing and reading. The unique contribution of morphological awareness to the literacy skills is seen in the decoding rate of learners in grade 8 and 9 and significantly, morphological learning is still evolving in the last years in school. Learners who have a better understanding of words at the morphemic level are prepared to handle the increased writing and reading demands across the content and curriculum. Better readers use their knowledge of morphological structures to arrange complex sentences. Morphemes are often used to modify the structure of words for instance; “He bakes cakes”, can be modified to “He baked cakes.” In this scenario, the letter “s” that is used for the third person singular is changed to “ed” and depicts the past tense (Morgan & Demuth, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay).
The ELL may face various challenges in the classroom based on the morphology. The struggling adolescent readers who do not have morphological structure experience difficulty in reading and recognizing words. This makes the ELL to experience difficulty in disseminating knowledge. The learners with the language disabilities experience delayed vocabulary development and difficulty in defining specific vocabulary words due to the deficit of the knowledge of morphology. The ELL experience difficulty when teaching the morphological patterns since the learners cannot comprehend the knowledge easily (Morgan & Demuth, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay).
The instructor can help the students with morphology by learning frequently used morphemes. This not only improves the learners spelling and knowledge, but also provides the best strategy for decoding and building the relevant vocabulary. Learning morphemes help learners especially the ones in the upper elementary grades to meet more uncommon words. The instructor must use speed drills to develop automatic recognition of morphemes (Morgan & Demuth, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay).
