HW: Key components of classical strain theory
1) In no more than 100 words, outline the key components of
classical strain theory, citing the reading.
2) Listen to season 2, episode 1 of the podcast “Serial,” linked to
below. (This season of the podcast is about Beau Bergdahl, a
soldier who left his post (“went AWOL”) in Afghanistan while
stationed there, and who consequently spent 5 years in the hands
of the Taliban.)
3) In the military, going “AWOL” is a crime. How can we use
classical strain theory to explain Berghdahl’s crime? For each
component of strain theory, you discussed in your answer to
question 1 above, find evidence/an example of it in Bergdahl’s
case as discussed in the podcast. Limit this section of the analysis
to no more than 400 words.
The analysis will be graded on the quality of its analysis, its
thoroughness in addressing the questions above, and the writing’s
clarity.
