Thus far, we have covered two British works from different time periods: Beowulf from the
Anglo-Saxon period, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from the Medieval period. Using your
knowledge of the poems themselves, as well as information from lectures and class discussions,
compare and contrast the ways in which Beowulf and Sir Gawain represent the hero archetype. Use
specific examples from the text to support your ideas.

Expectations:
Essays will be 3-4 typed pages in length, double spaced using 12pt font, heading, in-text citations
and formatting should be in the MLA style.
Getting Started:
Your first step in essay-writing should be identifying the traits that you feel best represent the hero
archetype. These traits can be taken from those you covered on your chart and venn diagram
comparing the two heros, and/or they can be taken from your own personal opinions on what
makes a hero. Once you have decided on the elements that make a hero, use the text to support your
ideas using direct quotes (with page numbers) and specific events (textual evidence). Here is a
