Nursing Assignment: I need help writing a research paper.

Discussion: The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle

In the media introduction to this module, it was suggested that you as a nurse have an important role in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). With a focus on patient care and outcomes, nurses may not always see themselves as contributors to the development of new systems. However, as you may have observed in your own experience, exclusion of nurse contributions when implementing systems can have dire consequences.

In this Discussion, you will consider the role you might play in systems development and the ramifications of not being an active participant in systems development.

To Prepare:

Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as presented in the Resources.

Reflect on your own healthcare organization and consider any steps your healthcare organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system.

Consider what a nurse might contribute to decisions made at each stage of the SDLC when planning for new health information technology.

By Day 3 of Week 9

Post a description of what you believe to be the consequences of a healthcare organization not involving nurses in each stage of the SDLC when purchasing and implementing a new health information technology system. Provide specific examples of potential issues at each stage of the SDLC and explain how the inclusion of nurses may help address these issues. Then, explain whether you had any input in the selection and planning of new health information technology systems in your nursing practice or healthcare organization and explain potential impacts of being included or not in the decision-making process. Be specific and provide examples.

Inclusion of Nurses
Nurses are involved in the purchase and implementation of new systems to ensure it is practical and appropriate. The first stage of planning requires the nurses in identifying the problems and assessing the condition. When nurses are not involved the real problems are not identified (Verma & Gupta, 2017). The second stage of analysis will require the input of nurses in redefining the requirements. If nurses are not consulted, the functionality of a system will not address the actual problems in healthcare. For example, a system may fail to fix the gaps in healthcare such as security of data. The development and integration stage nurses are needed to enhance their buy-in attitude towards the new system (Friganović, 2016: 2024 – Do my homework – Help write my assignment online). Failure to involve nurses will trigger negative attitudes and rejection of the technology. During the implementation and testing stage, nurses are involved to ensure they own the system. When nurses are not involved a system may fail due to lack of practical knowledge to use it.
I had an experience of sitting in a committee that was deliberating purchase and implementation of new technology. I was involved as one of the nurses to provide practical knowledge of nurses’ experiences when they are providing treatment (Ehrler, Lovis & Blondon, 2016: 2024 – Do my homework – Help write my assignment online). I was proud that the health organization had considered my input in the implementation of health information technology. My participation was crucial since it started looking forward to using the technology when it is implemented (Verma & Gupta, 2017). For example, I developed a sense of ownership by virtue of being involved in the software development stages. If I was not involved, I would have felt that the technology being implemented is strange and foreign. Therefore, it would be hard to adopt the system in taking care of patients.
