What surprises me about academic writing is that there are many various academic types of writing. I have learned that not all writings need to have the same outline, yet may still be formal. I have also learned that writing can still be formal as long as it is appropriate for the situations. Academic writing is diverse in that if varies in subject and audience and context. Academic writing can also be complex because the writer needs to use the precise words to covey the thoughts in order to make the reader or audience understand the same thoughts. I believe academic writing is somewhat similar to work writing because of need to get to the point in a professional matter. However, being in the military, most of the professional writing which I have done is usually following a premade template which involves little to no thinking. Now that I am getting a better foundation of what is appropriate for certain writing styles, I will be able to implement my own thoughts in a formal manner.
