Strategies for Adapting Maritime Education and Training to Emerging Technologies
Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, and autonomous systems are transforming the maritime sector and creating new challenges and opportunities for maritime education and training (MET). MET institutions need to adapt their curricula, pedagogy, and infrastructure to equip seafarers with the skills and competencies required for the digital era. This paper discusses some of the strategies that MET institutions can adopt to enhance their readiness and responsiveness to emerging technologies.
One of the strategies is to integrate emerging technologies into the MET curriculum and learning outcomes. This can be done by identifying the relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes that seafarers need to operate and maintain the new technologies, as well as the ethical, legal, and social implications of their use. For example, seafarers need to understand the principles and applications of artificial intelligence, big data analytics, blockchain, and cyber security, as well as their impact on maritime safety, security, efficiency, and sustainability. Moreover, seafarers need to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and lifelong learning skills to cope with the dynamic and complex technological environment.
Another strategy is to adopt innovative pedagogical methods and tools that leverage emerging technologies to enhance the quality and effectiveness of MET. This can be done by using digital platforms, online courses, blended learning, gamification, simulation, virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality to deliver interactive, immersive, and personalized learning experiences for seafarers. These methods and tools can also facilitate the assessment and feedback of seafarers’ learning outcomes and performance, as well as the recognition and certification of their competencies.
A third strategy is to upgrade the MET infrastructure and facilities to support the integration and adoption of emerging technologies. This can be done by investing in the hardware, software, network, security, and maintenance of the technological systems and devices that are used for MET. Furthermore, MET institutions need to establish partnerships and collaborations with other stakeholders such as technology providers, industry players, regulators, researchers, and educators to share best practices, resources, and expertise on emerging technologies.
In conclusion, emerging technologies pose significant challenges and opportunities for MET institutions. By adopting the strategies discussed in this paper, MET institutions can enhance their capacity and capability to prepare seafarers for the digital era.
